WHAT IS AN APOSTILLE?
An Apostille, pronounced as "ah-po-steel," originates from the French term for certification.
It refers to the authentication of documents under the terms of the 1961 Hague Convention abolishing the requirement of legalization for foreign public documents.
An Apostille is a specialized certificate issued by the Secretary of State that is attached to your original document to confirm its authenticity and legitimacy, ensuring its acceptance in countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention.
HAGUE VS NON-HAGUE COUNTRIES
In 1961, many countries joined together to create a simplified method of authenticating documents for universal recognition. Members of the conference, referred to as the Hague Convention, adopted a document referred to as an Apostille that would be recognized by all member countries.
There are two categories of destination countries: those that are part of the Hague Convention and those that are not. Apostilles can exclusively be obtained for countries within the Hague Convention.
If your intended destination falls outside the scope of the Hague Convention, it is categorized as a non-Hague Country.
In such cases, authentication is required through the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington D.C. and/or embassy legalization for the specific country.
If you are unsure what the process is for your specific document, give us a call.
Most states require recently issued documents, so be prepared to obtain a new certified copy. Feel free to email us a scan of the document before you send them to us so we can verify they can receive the desired certifications.
We cannot certify photocopies or scans of birth,
death, marriage, or divorce documents.
We need some details on the types of documents, what state the documents are from, what country they are going to, and how quickly this needs to be done to give you more accurate rates.
Expect a cost of the Apostille of the type of document, $20.00 Secretary of State fee for each document, expedited or normal mail expense, and any express service fees if need same day or urgently.
Documents certified by the State and destined for countries who are not members of the Hague Apostille Convention require State certification, U.S. Department of State certification, and Embassy or Consulate legalization. Also, documents issued by the U.S. Federal Government can only be processed through the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. before being presented to the Embassy or Consulate office for legalization.
